Marquette County shooting range project moves forward

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI--   The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board is recommending funding a shooting range in Sands Township.

The proposed site is along County Road 480 about two miles northwest of M-553 on property owned by the Marquette County Road Commission. The recommendation to approve $225,000 for the range is a pivotal step forward for the project.

Department of Natural Resources officials say the next step is to seek support for the project through the Sands Township zoning process.

The DNR will ask for public input on range design later in 2018. Officials are hoping to complete construction in the summer of 2019.

The total estimated project cost is about $900,000.
