Marquette County sex offender sweep results in warrants

MARQUETTE, MI--   Eight warrants were sought after Michigan State Police conducted a sex offender sweep in Marquette County last week.

Troopers from the Negaunee Post, the MSP Sex Offender Registry Unit, the U.S. Marshals Service, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, and Marquette City Police joined forces to ensure sex offenders are in compliance with the state Sex Offender Registry Act.  Investigators checked 139 homes.  That resulted in eight warrants for offenders who moved without notifying law enforcement, 111 were in compliance, and 20 will be rechecked because the offender wasn’t home.

Tier 1 offenders must verify their addresses yearly; Tier 2 must verify their address twice a year; and Tier 3 offenders must verify their addresses quarterly.  Failure to do so carries a penalty of two years in prison.

All registered sex offenders must report a change of name, address, employment, campus enrollment, internet identifiers and vehicle within three business days of that change. Failure to do so is a four-year felony.
