BIG BAY, Mich. (AP) — A rock formation in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has been reopened to climbers a year after it was closed by its owner because of liability concerns.
The Mining Journal reports that AAA Walls was reopened by Marquette-based Longyear Realty Corp. Longyear owns the walls and surrounding timberlands in a remote area of Marquette County.
The reopened areas include the main wall, first climbed in the 1970s, and a smaller formation known as Secret Crag.
Upper Peninsula Climbers Coalition and a national advocacy group, Access Fund, worked out an agreement with the owners that allows climbers to use the rock formation while addressing liability concerns.
The license is good through the end of the year and could be renewed next year. The site is for day use only.
