Marquette County landfill catches fire

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI--   Officials are trying to figure out what caused a fire at the Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority landfill Thursday morning.

Firefighters were notified around 5:50 a.m. Crews from Sands Township responded first, followed by crews from Chocolay Township, Negaunee Township and Marquette.

Officials aren’t sure what materials caused the fire, but flames were visible for hours on the southern side of the landfill. One small structure was damaged but no injuries were reported.

The Salvation Army also responded to the scene to feed first responders.
