Marquette Branch prisoners dissatisfied with food

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   Inmates at Marquette Branch Prison have held a demonstration over food complaints.

Michigan Corrections Department spokesman Chris Gautz told the Detroit Free Press Wednesday about 40 prisoners protested Saturday.  They demanded to meet with the warden about food served by Aramark Correctional Services. The Philadelphia-based contractor took over prison food services from state employees in December 2013.

Gautz says staff members convinced inmates to speak to their block representatives, who could convey complaints to the warden.

An Aramark spokeswoman says the warden discussed concerns with the food services director. She says this happens routinely in prisons.

Gautz says 114 Aramark workers have now been fired or banned from state prisons for alleged violations including drug smuggling, sanitation issues and engaging in sex acts with inmates.
