MAPS teachers decline to attend open house

MARQUETTE, MI--   Teachers in the Marquette Area Public Schools district will not be attending an open house scheduled for next week.

In a press release the Marquette Area Education Association said its membership had agreed not to participate in next Wednesday’s open house prior to the opening of this school year.  It said teachers are looking forward to meeting students on the first day of school.

Superintendent William Saunders issued a response Thursday.  He said administrators acknowledge the lack of participation from teachers will detract from the experience; however, he says, “We are committed to doing everything we can to make the first day of school a positive experience.”

The open house will be held as scheduled.

September 2 represents the second year teachers will work without a contract.

Administration says lower enrollment means less money for the district.
