Man suffers medical emergency before crashing car in Calumet

CALUMET, MI--   A Calumet traffic crash Thursday was caused by a medical event.

That’s according to the Michigan State Police, who were dispatched to Fourth and Scott streets around 5:15 p.m. They say Jeffrey Ruona, 56, of Calumet was driving when he suffered a medical emergency. The vehicle accelerated, left the roadway, hit a parked vehicle, then came to rest against a fence.

Ruona was unresponsive when witnesses got to him. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures at the scene.

Ruona was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Doctors confirmed he had suffered from a medical condition.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
