Man suffers critical injuries in Ishpeming Township crash

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person is hospitalized, following a two-vehicle crash on US-41 in Ishpeming Township.

State Police from the Negaunee Post say it happened Sunday around 12:20 p.m. at the intersection of Cooper Lake Road.  A Honda SUV driven by Gavin Gibson, 29, of Montana was southbound on Cooper Lake Road and attempted to cross the highway, but pulled into the path of a westbound Ford pickup truck driven by Frederick Furneaux, 51, of Lapeer.  The truck hit the SUV’s driver side door, sending the vehicle across the road into the eastbound lane and onto its side.

Gibson was taken to UP Health System Marquette, where he remains in critical condition.  Furneaux and his 51-year-old wife were treated at UPHS Bell for minor injuries and released.

The crash remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
