Man rescued after 6 hours in Lake Michigan during storm

SOUTH MANITOU ISLAND, MI (AP)--   The U.S. Coast Guard says it plucked a kayaker from Lake Michigan after the man was in the water for about six hours during a weekend storm.

The man was without his kayak but was wearing a life jacket when a Coast Guard crew raised him into a helicopter Sunday, between the Manitou Islands and Leelanau County in northern Lake Michigan. He appeared to have hypothermia but no other injuries.

The 33-year-old man was flashing a light around 8 p.m. His brother was able to paddle to an island before the storm hit.

Coast Guard Capt. Amy Cocanour says boaters should always check the weather before any trip.
