Man killed in Marquette County two-vehicle crash

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Marquette man has been killed in a crash with a patrol car.

Tuesday around 4:10 p.m. State Police from the Negaunee Post were called to M-553 south of the Marquette Mountain ski hill. They say a Pontiac Vibe driven by Nathaniel Carpenter, 80, of Marquette was northbound when it crossed the centerline and hit a southbound Marquette City Police patrol car.

Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was taken to UPHS-Marquette, and is listed in stable condition.

The accident remains under investigation. Officials say it appears a pre-existing medical condition likely contributed to the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident and has not been contacted by law enforcement is asked to call the Negaunee Post at 475-9922.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
