Man killed in Chippewa County accident

RABAR TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Detour man has been killed in a single-vehicle accident in Chippewa County.

The county Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened Saturday on M-48 near Townline Road in Rabar Township.  Deputies arrived on the scene around 11 p.m. and found a pickup truck in the ditch.

The driver—identified as 35-year-old Benjamin Hilts of Detour—was apparently southbound on M-48 when the truck left the road, went into the ditch, and hit a large rock and several trees before coming to rest on its side.  Hilts was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies believe speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.  Hilts was also not wearing a seat belt.

The accident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
