Man drives into St. Marys River, becomes trapped

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A driver in Chippewa County is lucky to be alive, after he became trapped in his partially submerged vehicle over the weekend.

Saturday around 11:30 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies and State Police responded to a report of a vehicle entering the St. Marys River at the end of 9 Mile Road. Several people in a boat found a vehicle partially submerged in the river with a man still stuck inside. Officers learned that the 73-year-old driver had driven into the water several hours earlier, but couldn’t get out of the car.

It appears he became disoriented and believed he was heading west toward I-75, when he was actually heading east.

The man was removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but he didn’t complain of injuries at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
