Man dies in Chippewa County snowmobile crash

SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP, MI (AP)--   Authorities say a 27-year-old Southeastern Michigan man was killed while snowmobiling in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department says Craig Althouse of Oakland County's Highland Township was riding on a trail in Superior Township on Saturday when he lost control of his snowmobile and struck some trees.

The crash site is about 20 miles west-southwest of Sault Ste. Marie near the unincorporated community of Raco.

The Sheriff's Department says that Althouse was driving too fast for conditions.  It says he was wearing a helmet.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
