Man crashes snowmobile near Marquette County railroad tracks

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Minnesota man has been seriously injured in an Ely Township snowmobile accident.

Troopers from the Negaunee Post were called Wednesday at 1 p.m. to Trail 8 near County Road 496 in the Diorite location.  They say Kent Holtz, 46, of Becker was following another snowmobile and driving through the snow it kicked up when he lost control of his own machine.  He drove off the trail and crashed into a tree.

Because the trail is so close to tracks emergency responders had to notify Canadian National Railroad to slow a train that was scheduled to travel through the crash area.

Holtz was taken to U.P. Health System Bell for treatment of his injuries.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
