Man cited after climbing Pictured Rocks landmark

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

MUNISING, MI--    A downstate man landed on the wrong side of the law after he climbed the Miner’s Castle turret at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Tuesday.

Around 12:20 p.m. rangers noticed a man sitting on top of the turret. They say the 30-year-old Auburn Hills man ignored warning signs and jumped a fence to climb the landmark. He promptly got stuck. Members of Alger County Rescue 21 had to rig a rope system to get the man down.

The subject now faces federal violations of trespassing into a closed area, damaging a natural resource, and disorderly conduct-creating a hazardous situation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
