Man charged in 2017 drowning death sentenced

MUNISING, MI--   A Marquette man charged in the drowning death of a downstate man in Lake Superior last summer has been sentenced.

Timothy Preston was arrested in August after he and six other passengers fell out of his wooden kit boat near AuTrain. Six people were rescued, but Robert Louis, 59, of Lake Orion drowned. They were on the lake to spread the ashes of Louis’ father, who had died of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Preston pleaded guilty to marine safety – negligent crippling or death and operating while intoxicated, causing death. He was sentenced this week to 11 months in jail; however, he was ordered to serve only 45 days on weekends, then two years of probation. If he violates his probation, Preston must serve the full 11 months.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
