Man airlifted from Beaver Island Saturday

BEAVER ISLAND, MI--   A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter evacuated a man with a life-threatening illness from Beaver Island in northern Lake Michigan Saturday morning.

A helicopter from Air Station Traverse City tried to reach the man early in the morning, but heavy fog, snow, and icing conditions forced it back. Another crew reached the island later that morning under slightly better conditions. The helicopter took the man to Cherry Capital Airport, where an ambulance took him to the hospital.

The Coast Guard cutter Biscayne Bay out of St. Ignace and an aircraft from Elizabeth City, North Carolina were also dispatched in case the helicopter couldn’t reach Beaver Island.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
