SAULT STE. MARIE, MI-- Critical repairs will be made to one of the Soo locks this winter.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a downstate company a contract for more than $2.8 million to fix a part of the MacArthur Lock. The project involves removing existing gate anchorages, then fabricating and installing new ones.
The work will be done during the locks’ annual winter maintenance shutdown from January to mid-March of 2018. It’s expected to be complete by June.
The MacArthur lock was built in 1943 and has a length of 800 feet, a width of 80 feet, and a depth of 31 feet. It accommodates smaller vessels than the Poe Lock, which handles the majority of ships moving materials on the Great Lakes.
