LSSU starts construction on new research center

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Lake Superior State University broke ground on a new Great Lakes research facility in Sault Ste. Marie last week.

The Center for Freshwater Research and Education will allow scientists, organizations and college students to study the Great Lakes region and its habitats.

LSSU President Rodney Hanley says it will also teach K-12 students about Great Lakes ecosystems.

“To inform the next generation of students about the Great Lakes and the overall importance of the Lakes to our economy, to the environmental well-being, and to our legacy,” he says.

Hanley says the school’s existing Aquatic Research Laboratory will be turned into a dedicated hatchery.

The new, $13.2 million center is expected to open in 2020.
