LSSU mourns President Tom Pleger

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--    Lake Superior State University President Tom Pleger has died.

According to the school’s website the 48-year-old Pleger passed away unexpectedly Sunday after undergoing brain surgery in Petoskey. Officials say he was taken to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday, then transferred to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital and had surgery on Friday. He was with family recovering in the ICU when he passed early Sunday morning.

Pleger became LSSU’s 8th president July 1st of 2014. He held a doctorate of Archeology and Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Interim Provost David Roland Finley will take over day-to-day operations until LSSU’s Board of Trustees decides the next course of action. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
