Lost hikers found in Ontonagon County

ONTONAGON COUNTY, MI--   Three hikers have been found safe after they got lost in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

The man, woman and teenaged girl were declared missing Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. when they didn’t return at a certain time, and a search party was sent out.

The hikers were able to call 911 with a cell phone.  The dispatcher told them to stay where they were so searchers could find them.

The three were found around 9:30 p.m. near Government Peak, at least six miles away from any trailhead.  Park rangers say the hikers were uninjured, but walking for ten hours in the rain had rendered them wet, hungry, and dehydrated.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
