Legislators getting settled in at the state Capitol

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan lawmakers are starting a new two-year session with a change in leadership and new members.

Three in every 10 legislators being sworn in Wednesday are new to the Republican-led Legislature. And three of the top four legislative leaders are new because their predecessors left Lansing under term limits.

Republicans will enjoy expanded majorities in both the House and Senate after the November election.

Forty-three members of the 110-seat House are new to the chamber. The 38-seat Senate has 10 new members — nine who previously served in the House.

It's a day for legislators to take their oath, celebrate with family and choose seats.

Lawmakers will do more official business once Governor Rick Snyder delivers his State of the State initiatives next week and a budget proposal in February.
