LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan lawmakers are accelerating efforts to finish state government's next budget.
Fourteen of 17 budget conference committees have scheduled meetings Tuesday in the Capitol. The goal is to move spending bills out of committees this week so the full Republican-controlled Legislature can vote next week.
Governor Rick Snyder and legislative leaders struck a broad agreement last week on the budget that begins in four months. But many differences between the House and Senate versions of spending legislation must be resolved.
Conference committees scheduled to meet Tuesday include those responsible for universities, community colleges, prisons, social services and roads. Legislators have announced plans to divert $400 million in general funds to the transportation budget after the defeat of a sales tax increase tied to additional road funding.
