MUNISING, MI (AP)-- Three men are safe after being pitched from their kayaks into Lake Superior by strong winds and high waves.
Jim Farrington, 52, of Alden, Michigan, TolanAnnis, 52, of Eagle, Michigan, and Sean Royston, 47, of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin started kayaking Tuesday around 10:30 a.m. from Sand Point to Mosquito Beach near Munising. Waves reaching up to six feet turned over the kayaks near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
Royston reportedly reached land at Sand Point after four hours in the water. After he notified police a Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched from Traverse City and a boat from Marquette. Farrington was later found on a cliff face and lifted into the helicopter by a cable.
Annis called authorities about 8 p.m. Tuesday, saying he had made it to land after nearly seven hours in the lake.
The National Parks Service says the men were wearing wetsuits and life jackets and that the safety equipment "saved their lives."
