Ishpeming Township shooting incident ends with arrest

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, MI--   There were some tense moments in Ishpeming Township Tuesday afternoon, after a shooting incident prompted police to close roads around Christine Street.

State Police say the situation began around 2:40, when a reportedly suicidal man apparently fired several shots inside a residence.  Officers encountered the man in his front yard.  The 43-year-old subject had a significant amount of blood on his left hand, but refused to speak with officers and went into the house.

Police used a loudspeaker to try to communicate with the suspect, who stepped out of the house several times, once with what was described as a “long gun”.

A standoff with police lasted about 2.5 hours, ending when the suspect exited the house with a handgun, put it down, and picked up a remote speaker.  Police shot him with a bean bag round and took him into custody.

The suspect was taken to UPHS Marquette for a psychological evaluation.  He has not yet been charged.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post, Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team, Ishpeming City Police, and Ishpeming Township Police all assisted at the scene.
