SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)-- The bridge linking the U.S. and Canada in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is getting an underwater inspection.
The Michigan Department of Transportation says the work scheduled for April 27-29 involves inspecting the International Bridge's piers below the water line in the St. Marys River.
The $51,000 inspection will use digital recording devices to examine and record the condition of the piers in areas not visible above the water line.
The inspection is mandated by federal standards and is to be performed every five years. The last inspection was conducted in 2009 and the current inspection was scheduled for 2014, but it was postponed until this year due to high water flow in the river.
The bridge connects Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
