Injuries reported in Portage Township car-semi crash

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person suffered injuries in a crash between a car and semi tractor-trailer Wednesday morning in Houghton County.

Sheriff’s Officials say it happened around 8:15 a.m. on M-26 just south of Green Acres Road in Portage Township.  A car driven by a 40-year-old Laurium woman was northbound when witnesses say it veered across the centerline and struck a southbound semi nearly head-on.

Neither the driver of the semi nor a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle were injured.  The driver of the car had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life from the Hurontown Fire and Rescue Department.  She was taken to U.P. Health System Portage for treatment of her injuries.

Michigan Tech Police, Michigan State Police, and Houghton City Police assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
