FAYETTE, MI (AP)-- Restoration work continues at Fayette Historic State Park in Delta County as the tourist season winds down.
The park is located on the Garden Peninsula at the site of a 19th century industrial community and company town that operated from 1867 to 1891, when its furnaces generated more than 229,000 tons of pig iron. It was the state's second-largest producer of charcoal iron.
Twenty buildings are preserved, including the furnace complex, hotel, town hall, company office and several residences. Some of the structures are being restored and interpretive signs are being installed. Work has been completed on the lower level of the historic Shelton House hotel.
A barrier fence has been built around the furnace area and more interpretive panels will be in place before the 2015 season.
