Identity of rafter released

DICKINSON COUNTY, MI--   Officials have released additional details regarding the death of a rafter on the Menominee River.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department says Mark Fackler, 59, of Mundelein, Illinois was with a group on Piers Gorge Tuesday afternoon.  His raft apparently hit a rock in some rapids and tipped over, throwing him and a woman into the water.  The woman was able to escape, but Fackler became trapped underneath.  His body was recovered around 4 p.m.

The group was rafting through Northwoods Adventures out of Vulcan.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
