Hubbell woman killed in Houghton County traffic crash

CHASSELL TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was killed in a multiple-vehicle accident in Chassell Township over the weekend.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 10 a.m. on US-41 at the Sturgeon River Bridge. A semi tractor trailer hauling gasoline and diesel fuel was northbound when a Toyota SUV driven by Jennifer Jennings-Shaud, 40, of L’Anse tried to pass and lost control on the icy roadway. The SUV hit a southbound Honda CRV driven by Christine Juntunen, 45, of Hubbell head-on, pushing it into the northbound lane. The fuel truck hit the Honda on the driver’s side, killing Juntunen.

A fourth vehicle—a southbound Audi—was caught in the crash as well, but no one in that vehicle was injured.

Jennings-Shaud and a passenger were taken to Aspirus Keweenaw. She was later transferred to UPHS Marquette for further treatment.

The driver of the fuel truck, David Hooper, 50, of Green Bay, was not injured.

Several agencies were called in to contain and clean up a large amount of fuel spilled from the tanker, including the U.S. Coast Guard Containment Unit, Michigan Department of Transportation, U.S. Environmental Agency, and Michigan DEQ.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
