Houghton-Hancock lift bridge to be inspected

HOUGHTON, MI--   The Michigan Department of Transportation is conducting detailed inspections of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge starting Monday.

Officials say intermittent lane closures and frequent opening of the bridge will be required from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. One lane of vehicle traffic will be open in each direction from May 21 through 24. At some point traffic on the M-26 connector ramp will be stopped to allow inspections.

MDOT says there will also be periods of time where the bridge will be inoperable for marine traffic between Monday and Friday.

Officials will evaluate the mechanical, structural, and electrical components of the bridge to identify future maintenance and repair work.
