Hearing for Manistique murder suspect postponed

MANISTIQUE, MI--   The preliminary exam for a suspect in a Schoolcraft County triple homicide did not go forward Wednesday.

Garry Cordell, 46, of Manistique is charged with three counts each of open murder, conspiracy to commit open murder, first-degree murder, and unlawful imprisonment in connection with the deaths of Jody Hutchinson, Heather Aldrich, and Carrie Nelson in April.

Prosecuting Attorney Tim Noble said he didn’t believe the timing of the hearing was right, that some facts would come to light that could cause the case to be tried more in the media than it already has.  The defense opposed the hearing’s postponement.

Cordell will appear in court with codefendants Kenneth Brunke and Marietta Carlson July 22 for a motions hearing.  A pretrial hearing is set for August 3.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
