Hancock teen faces charges for breaking into churches

HANCOCK, MI--   A suspect in the break-ins of three Hancock churches has been arrested.

The Hancock Police Department says Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Glad Tidings Assembly of God, and Zion Lutheran Church were broken into four times between August 11 and 19.  The perpetrator took more than $1,000 dollars in cash, checks, and gift cards and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Investigation led to the arrest of Michael Cote, 19.  He’s charged with two counts of breaking and entering with intent and one count of malicious destruction of a building between $1,000 and $20,000.  He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted as charged.

Police say they’re seeking more information about the burglaries and may have additional suspects.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
