Gwinn man suspected of hitting power pole in Sawyer

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Gwinn man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly hit a utility pole with his vehicle and left the scene. 

Forsyth Township Police responded around 12:40 a.m. to the area of Jupiter Street on a report that a vehicle had struck a power pole and other property.  The accident caused a power outage on Sawyer that affected numerous residences.

Officers interviewed witnesses and were able to identify and locate a suspect.  Christian Champion, 21, was arrested for operating with a high blood-alcohol content, unlawful use of a license plate, operating a motor vehicle without security, and failure to stop at the scene of a property damage accident. 

Upper Peninsula Power Company worked to restore power to about 380 residents.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
