Great Lakes ice breaking over

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   Efforts to break up ice on the Great Lakes have wrapped up after more than four months.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release that its crews and Canadian counterparts finished ice breaking operations Monday. Crews worked to help keep shipping vessels moving on the Great Lakes as well as the St. Marys River, Detroit River and Straits of Mackinac.

Operations included clearing two significant plugs in the St. Clair River, easing high water levels that were nearing the flood stage.

The Coast Guard says crews also helped break free the motor vessel Arthur M. Anderson from the ice near Conneaut Harbor, Ohio, in February.
