Grants available for Great Lakes projects

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Federal officials are seeking applicants for up to $27.5 million in grants for projects meant to improve the Great Lakes environment.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says state and local agencies, tribes, universities and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply.

The grants are available under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, an Obama administration program designed to make progress on the biggest ecological risks in the region. They include invasive species, toxic pollution, runoff that causes algae blooms, and loss of wetlands and other wildlife habitat.
Applications are due Aug. 25.

A webinar explaining the application process is scheduled for July 29.
