Governor declares State of Emergency in Marquette County

MARQUETTE, MI--   Marquette County will get financial and other aid, now that Governor Rick Snyder has declared a State of Emergency.

County officials have been dealing with frozen pipes and broken water and sewer mains caused by deep frost lines this winter, and many municipalities have run out of funding to pay for repairs.  Officials say the situation will likely get even worse.

The designation means the state will provide money and other resources to help respond to the emergency.  Local units of government will be able to apply for qualified reimbursement for expenses incurred by the harsh winter.  The declaration also means President Obama could declare of State of Disaster if per-capita thresholds are met.

Freezing pipes and related issues have cost the county about $1.6 million so far.

Officials asked the governor to declare a state of emergency in March due to health and safety concerns, but were denied.  They asked again this month, and Thursday learned the request was approved.

The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division will coordinate the state's efforts with Marquette County.
