LANSING, MI-- A bill that protects wood-burning stoves from falling under Environmental Protection Agency air quality rules has passed the Michigan Legislature.
Sponsored by Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba, Senate Bill 910 prohibits the Department of Environmental Quality from regulating wood-burning stoves through rules and from enforcing any EPA regulations that limit emissions wood-burning appliances that may be imposed after May 1.
The new standards set forth by the EPA would affect new pellet, corn burner and outdoor wood boilers.
Wood stove and heating appliance manufacturers say the proposed rules could virtually end the burning of wood for heat in the U.S. and more than double the cost of new wood-burning appliances.
The bill has been sent to Governor Rick Snyder for his consideration.
