Girl killed in car by loaded rifle

DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI (AP)--  Authorities say a 12-year-old Chippewa County girl has died after a gun discharged in the vehicle in which she was riding.

The county Prosecutor’s Office says the girl was shot Sunday morning during a weekend youth hunt on Drummond Island.

Officials say the girl was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle with two adults and another child when a hunting rifle discharged.

Prosecutor Brian Peppler says the girl's name won’t be released out of respect for her and her family.  He says law enforcement is conducting a thorough investigation, which will take some time to complete.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
