Gary Peters to 'debate' empty chair next week

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP)--   Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Gary Peters plans to keep the pressure on his opponent to debate, scheduling a forum where an empty chair will stand in for Republican Terri Lynn Land.

The Peters campaign says he'll appear Monday night at Grand Valley State University, where Grand Rapids station WOOD-TV proposed having a Senate debate. The NBC affiliate postponed the proposed debate because Land didn't respond to its invitation.

Peters will instead hold a forum with supporters.

Peters' campaign says he'll follow the footsteps of Clint Eastwood, who had a conversation with an empty chair at the 2012 Republican National Convention. Land has committed to joint appearances but not a debate.

Land spokeswoman Heather Swift says it's appropriate Peters would debate himself because "Congressman Gary" and "candidate Gary" are at odds.
