Future of vehicles, UP planning subject of Marquette workshop

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Center for Automotive Research is holding a workshop in Marquette this week to help municipal leaders understand how changes in the automotive industry might affect them.

Senior Project Manager Valerie Sathe Brugeman says the meeting is part of the Future Cities project, which aims to discuss the role of local communities as connected and automated vehicles become more prolific. She says while larger cities might want to consider sprawl and how parking structures for self-parking cars might look, more rural areas will work with innovative mobility services.

“Things like car sharing, things like micro-transit, which is using other services to help get people that aren’t near a city center to a city center without actually having a bus system having to go far out,” she says.

Sathe Brugeman says the workshop will also allow leaders and planners to answer how relevant and feasible CAR suggestions might be.

The workshop is funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. It takes place Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Marquette Commons.
