Former Finlandia students headed to trial for stealing guns

HOUGHTON, MI--   Trial is set for two former Finlandia students accused of stealing guns and ammunition from a Hancock store in December.

Alexander Santiago and Juan Pereyra are both facing federal charges of stealing a firearm from a licensed dealer and conspiracy to steal a firearm. A federal complaint states Santiago, Pereyra, and third defendant Jake Hugall agreed to carry out the theft at the Northwoods Trading Post December 10. Hugall apparently acted as lookout and the other two took three pistols. They were later found in a Finlandia dorm room.

Hugall pleaded guilty in March to larceny of a firearm. He was sentenced to four months in jail.

A pretrial conference for Santiago and Pereyra is scheduled for June 19. If a plea agreement isn’t reached by July 17 another pretrial will be held August 1. Trial is set for August 7.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
