Food bank to deliver twice as much food in U.P. this month than last year

MARQUETTE, MI--   Feeding America West Michigan says it expects to double the amount of food it will deliver to the Upper Peninsula this month.

The food bank has changed its delivery model from collecting food at branch warehouses to distributing it via mobile food pantries.  Officials say under the new approach Feeding America West Michigan is bringing more food directly to agencies and people in need.  The agency expects to distribute 152,000 meals in the U.P. this month – an increase of 114 percent over February 2015.

CEO Ken Estelle says the need for hunger relief services in the U.P. continues to rise, especially in rural areas and towns where large businesses have closed.

Feeding America West Michigan is planning a number of mobile pantries across the region this month.
