MARQUETTE, MI-- The Beaumier UP Heritage Center will honor the recipients of the 2018 Upper Peninsula Folklife Awards next week.
The award is given to individuals and organizations that have helped preserve and promote the traditional arts and culture of the region. This year the award will be given to Dave Bezotte of Chassell and the Trenary Home Bakery.
Bezotte is the leader of the U.P.'s only French singing group, Maple Sugar Folks. In addition, he plays in several ethnic music ensembles in the Copper Country. He volunteers for the Chassell Historical Organization and is an organizer for Chassell's annual strawberry festival.
The Trenary Home Bakery was established in 1928 and run by generations of three different families. It specializes in making the Finnish dried coffee bread “korppu,” but sells it under the name Trenary Toast.
The awards will be presented at the center’s annual Heritage Dinner on May 15.
