Fire turns deadly in Ironwood

IRONWOOD, MI--   One person has died in an Ironwood building fire.

WLUC-TV says the fire at 102 East Aurora Street was reported at 2:38 a.m. Wednesday. The two-story building was a business called Chelsi’s Corner with apartments on the second floor. Several people were evacuated, but one person was killed.

Flames engulfed the building and spread to at least one other structure, which collapsed. Both are total losses. Ironwood Fire Chief Gregory Klecker now says the fire is suspicious.

Ironwood Area Schools were dismissed at 9:30 a.m. due to poor air quality caused by the fire. High velocity water flows through fire hydrants have caused the water to turn slightly brown. Officials say residents should run their water until it’s clear before they drink it.

Assisting at the scene were the Hurley Fire Department, Michigan State Police, and the Gogebic and Iron County Sheriff’s Departments.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
