Fire scorches land near Mass City

GREENLAND TOWNSHIP, MI (AP)--   Several acres of land were consumed by a grass fire Thursday in Ontonagon County.

Undersheriff Gerald Balcomb says around 4 p.m. Negaunee Regional Dispatch received a 911 call for a fire off M-26 in Greenland Township, about a mile west of Mass City.  The Greenland and Rockland fire departments responded, along with a plane from the Twin Lakes, Wisconsin DNR.

Officials say the fire consumed a large area of land, including a deer blind.  Crews worked about 1.5 hours to extinguish the blaze.

There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
