Fire at NMU shuts down building

MARQUETTE, MI--   Fire has closed a building at Northern Michigan University.

The fire reportedly happened around 8:30 a.m. Monday on the third floor of the New Science building. Officials said fire doors kept it from spreading into the West Science building.

NMU spokesman Derek Hall says it started in a third-floor chemistry storage room when a wastebasket went up in flames.

“Being a chemistry storage area, they have to be really careful of what chemicals and that type of thing [are in there], and so the fire department is going to walk through that process.”

Two trucks from the City of Marquette Fire Department were on the scene, along with personnel from NMU Public Safety.

One employee said he was worried about the influx of water from hoses and the welfare of animals used for research in the New Science building. Someone was sent in to the second floor to take care of them.

Both the New Science facility and West Science are closed for the rest of the day Monday as smoke and water cleanup continue.

Hall says faculty and some students were in New Science at the time the alarms went off, but no one was injured.

The fire remains under investigation.
