HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP, MI-- The County Road 601 fire in Humboldt Township has been 100 percent contained.
DNR incident commander Pete Glover says firefighters are working 50 to 100 feet in from the edges of the 80-acre blaze. They’re using foam and water to mop up any hot spots.
Officials say no injuries have been reported; no structures have been damaged; no new hotspots have been found outside the fire line; and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire was reported Thursday around 1 p.m. in an area where crews logged pulpwood last winter. The log piles created an excellent source of fuel for the blaze. Some pile remnants, still hot, were broken apart Saturday. Higher relative humidity and a chance of showers and thunderstorms are expected to help diminish the heat of the wood.
Crews from the Michigan DNR and Wisconsin crews from Mellen and Waupaca remained on the scene Saturday. The Humboldt Township Fire Department continued to shuttle water from the Humboldt Mill to the fire scene.
Work on the fire is expected to stop around 8 p.m. Saturday. One engine crew will patrol the fire area overnight.
