Fire destroys Marquette structure

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette Fire Department is trying to figure out what started a structure fire on Grant Street Thursday.

Firefighters were initially called just before 8 a.m. to 401 Lincoln Avenue for a general alarm. Dispatch said lightning might have struck the structure or nearby. Crews investigated the building and found the fire alarm system had been damaged and wasn’t functioning properly—possibly from a power surge. The alarm system was disabled and the building put on fire watch.

As firefighters started to clear the scene they found a structure at 910 Grant Street fully engulfed. A hose had to be stretched across Lincoln to extinguish the blaze.

Marquette City Police controlled traffic and the Board of Light and Power was contacted, as a utility pole was close enough to the fire to be damaged by radiant heat.

The structure was a total loss. No injuries were reported.
