Fire claims life in Crystal Falls Township

CRYSTAL FALLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   State Police are investigating a fatal house fire in Iron County.  

Troopers from the Iron Mountain Post responded to 564 Lind Road in Crystal Falls Township around 12:50 Thursday morning.  They say homeowner Douglas Takala had returned home from work and found the house fully engulfed.

After the Crystal Falls Fire Department extinguished the blaze officials found human remains inside the residence.  They’re believed to be those of Takala’s 58-year-old wife, Sandra. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit, Northstar EMS, the Iron County Sheriff’s Department and WE Energies assisted at the scene. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
